Your 2026 Month-by-Month Financial Checklist

(4 Minute Read) — A new year creates a natural moment to pause, take inventory, and get organized. At Unitus, we believe progress is easier when you break it into manageable steps. Instead of tackling everything at once, try focusing on one area of your financial life each month. Small, steady actions add up over time and help you build confidence as you work toward your goals.

Whether you want to save more, reduce stress, or simply feel more in control, this month-by-month checklist gives you a clear path forward. And remember, our team is here to help at every step with products, digital tools, and friendly guidance.

January: Review your cash flow

Start the year by understanding where your money went last year. Look at your spending and ask yourself if you received value from each category. If you already track expenses, this will be quick. If not, review your year-end statements. Highlight areas where you would like to spend less.

Unitus can help: The Unitus Rewards Program offers automatic savings that move money into your Rewards Savings account every time you use your debit or credit card. It is an easy way to redirect your spending toward future goals.

February: Review wills and powers of attorney

Make sure your wishes are clear and legally documented. Review your will and confirm that your money will support the people and causes you care about. Check your powers of attorney for property and health care and make sure you have trusted people designated.

March: Check beneficiaries and account titles

Your estate plan includes more than a will. Review beneficiary designations for your retirement accounts and life insurance. Confirm how your accounts are titled and understand what will transfer directly to loved ones. A quick check each year prevents surprises later.

April: Review tax withholding

Look at your most recent tax return and determine if you had too much or too little withheld from your paycheck. A refund might feel good, but it may mean you can increase the amount you receive in each paycheck.

May: Review homeowners, renters, and auto insurance

Before summer travel begins, check your insurance coverage. Make sure your policies provide the right level of protection for your home, your belongings, and your car. If you are not sure what you need, ask your insurance agent to walk through your coverage line by line.

June: Review asset allocation

Take time to check how your investments are divided between stocks, bonds, and cash. Compare this to the level of risk you feel comfortable with. If your allocation has drifted, you may want to rebalance.

Unitus can help: Schedule a free consultation with a Unitus Financial Advisor to discuss your investments. An advisor can help you get started if you’re just starting out.

July: Review Social Security and pension information

Log in to ssa.gov to check your Social Security statement. Review pension or retirement plan projections and understand how timing will affect your future payments. Knowing what to expect helps you plan with confidence.

August: Review your credit report and credit score

Access your free credit score in Digital Banking to check for errors and review your open accounts. Look at your credit score and see if you could qualify for a better rate on any of your loans.

Unitus can help: Our loan specialists can help you explore refinancing options that may reduce your payments or interest costs. Check out our financial calculators to see how much you could save with a lower rate, if qualified.

September: Review your retirement contributions and company match

Check how much you are contributing to your retirement plan and adjust if needed. Make sure you are receiving the full match from your employer if one is offered. Missing a match means missing out on free money.

October: Review health insurance and disability coverage

Open enrollment season is a good time to confirm that your current plans, networks, and coverages still fit your needs. Decide how much to contribute to an FSA account if you use one.

November: Review life insurance

If you have dependents, review your life insurance to make sure they would be financially protected if something happened to you. Employer-provided life insurance often covers only one year of salary which is rarely enough for a family.

December: Update your net worth report

Close out the year by updating your net worth. List everything you own and everything you owe. Subtract what you owe from what you own to calculate your net worth. This annual snapshot helps you see your progress year after year.
