Unitus Community Credit Union hosts Doernbecher Children’s Hospital service project and Financial Workshop with 2017 Rose Festival Court

Portland, Ore., June 8, 2017 – Unitus Community Credit Union Mentors have spent this Rose Festival season giving back to the 15 talented young women on the 2017 Court and their local community. Unitus wraps up its third year as title sponsor of the Rose Festival Court Program, transforming these once new activities into beloved traditions.
The 15 Unitus female executives partnered with the Court for their annual visit to the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital on April 12, 2017, making fleece-tie blankets for the patients. “Those kids truly matter,” said Laurie Kresl, Unitus VP of Marketing & Brand Development and Mentor. “If I can make a blanket that they can cuddle up with, what could be better than that.”
Unitus Mentors and Princesses also toured the Credit Unions for Kids Outpatient Clinic located on the 7th floor of Doernbecher. This wing was funded by Credit Unions for Kids, which was first implemented by Unitus using various fundraising initiatives.
After waving goodbye to Hope the Therapy Dog, Mentors and Princesses were ready for their next project – an internal Financial Workshop to prepare the high school girls for their collegiate futures ahead. The Workshop, held in Unitus’ downtown plaza location on May 24, 2017, was facilitated by Natalie Cook, Business Development Officer at Unitus.
The 2017 Court was engaged in conversations about the difference between a credit score and credit report, revolving loans and installment loans, and, one of the more popular topics, how to minimize debt. Mentors interacted with the Princesses, advising them using first-hand life experience to guide them as they enter the next chapter of their life.
“We see a lot of people come in with no credit history, just like you guys,” said Heather Lane, Member Services Senior Analyst at Unitus. “The good thing is, you can come to a credit union and we treat you like an individual. We look at your circumstances, we understand and we care.”
While one of the Princesses may not have liked hearing their advice to cut down on her $4.65 daily Starbucks order, Unitus mentors reassured the Princesses that there are plenty of resources and tools available to help them achieve financial success.
About the Rose Festival Court presented by Unitus Community Credit Union
Unitus is proud to take part in one of Portland’s most beloved traditions as the presenting sponsor of the Rose Festival Court. One of the most unique opportunities associated with this sponsorship is the mentor program where strong business women in the Portland area are paired with each Princess.
Representing Portland Metro-area high schools, the Rose Festival Court is comprised of 15 outstanding young women elected by members of the community and their fellow students, known to exemplify an impressive range of involvement from extra-curricular activities, academic
achievement and volunteerism.
Mentors gladly volunteer to bond with each Princess during their time on the Court, sharing life experiences, career advice, guidance, and leadership. This relationship often lasts far beyond the bounds of the three-month mentorship program, developing into lifelong friendships.
