General Account Inquiries

Q: What is a Prime Share?
A: A Prime Share is your membership account. It works just like a regular savings account and earns the same interest as other Unitus savings accounts. A $5 deposit opens your Prime Share, entitling you to all the benefits of membership--just as long as a $5 balance remains in your account.

Q: What is the difference between my balance and my available balance?
A: The balance is the amount of money you have in your account not including pending items that have not cleared; the available balance is the actual amount you have in your account once pending items clear. It's also the full amount that you can withdraw from your account.

If you have a hold on your account, funds are not available for any kind of withdrawal (including VISA check card purchases and check clearing).

Q: How can I add or remove a joint from my account?
A: To add or remove a joint from your account, you need to complete a Membership Application with updated information. You will also need to have each individual who will be on the account sign the application and each new individual must provide proof of ID. Then simply mail or fax the application back to us!

Q: Are my funds insured?
A: Deposited funds at Unitus are insured with the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a US Government Agency. Regular accounts are insured for up to $100,000; IRA accounts are insured separately for up to $250,000.

Please contact Member Services for information regarding multiple account holders.

Q: Why can't I make more than six transfers in one month?
A: Per Federal Reserve Board Regulation D, a member may make no more than six remote transfers (telephone, online, or overdraft transfers qualify as remote transfers) per calendar month from a non-transaction or savings account.

However, a member can make limitless ATM, written, or in-person transfers and loan payments from a non-transaction account. The primary purpose of Regulation D is to protect the Monetary Reserves that must be maintained for the institution with the Federal Reserve System.

Q: How do I access my account at a shared branch?
A: You'll need the following three (3) things when you visit a Credit Union Service Center or shared branching location:

  1. The name of your credit union
  2. Your account number at your credit union
  3. A current, unexpired U.S. government-issued picture ID with signature (state issued driver's license or identification card, U.S. passport, City/State/County/Federal identification card or badge or a U.S. Armed Forces identification card).

Have these items ready to present to the teller. This will save you time and will help us better serve you. All transactions require identification. Keep in mind, we only ask for identification because we care about protecting your identity and account information.

Hold Policy

Q: What is your check hold policy?
A: Check deposits are not available on the business day of their deposit. Availability of a check deposit depends on the amount of the check, what kind of check is being deposited, whether the check is from a local source or not and a members' relationship with Unitus.

Any check deposits exceeding $1,000 made at an ATM belonging to another institution will have a five-day business hold placed, including cash deposits.

Q: Why is a hold placed on my account?
A: VISA check card transactions do not post immediately to your account. The funds from the transaction are on hold (unavailable) until the charge posts. A VISA check card charge either generates a receipt for you to sign or is a transaction done over the phone or online.

Q: When is the hold released?
A: The funds from the transaction are on hold until the charge posts. Generally, these holds are released within three days.

Q: Will a check be able to clear my account while my funds are on hold?
A: If you have a hold on funds in your account, these funds are not available for any kind of withdrawal, including VISA check card purchases and check clearing. If there are not enough available funds to cover a check, any available overdraft protection will be used. If not enough overdraft funds are available, the check will be returned.

In addition, Unitus members with accounts in good standing can enjoy Courtesy Pay, which covers a maximum overdraft amount of $100 (within the first 60 days an account has been opened) or $300 thereafter.
