Unitus' Board of Directors are part of our Official Family, and serve voluntarily on behalf of the members. The Board establishes the credit union's direction by adopting policies that set a strategic direction for the organization and provide overall framework.

Supervisory Committee
Our Supervisory Committee is also part of the Official Family, assisting the Board of Directors by overseeing financial reporting responsibilities. The Supervisory Committee also assumes responsibility for internal controls, audit processes and compliance with laws, regulations and codes of conduct within the credit union.

Management Team


Patricia Smith, President/CEO

Patricia E. Smith is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Unitus Community Credit Union in Portland, Oregon (formerly Oregon Telco Community Credit Union). Pat assumed this position in March 2002. Prior to taking leadership of the $790 million credit union, Smith served 22 years at Boeing Employees' Credit Union in Seattle, WA. She served as Vice President of Corporate Planning and Development for approximately two years, where she also directed the BECU Foundation and BECU's Community Relations. Prior to this position, she served as Vice President of Operations for over 17 years. Her responsibilities included Chief Lending Officer (both consumer and mortgage), Member Services departments/branches including the Contact Center, Compliance and Operations for the then $4 billion, 360,000 plus member credit union.

In addition to her duties at Unitus Community Credit Union, Pat is affiliated with several other organizations. She is actively involved in the Credit Union Association of Oregon's Governmental Affairs Committee and co-chairs the State Governmental Affairs Committee. She serves as Vice Chair on the Filene Research Council's Board of Directors and served approximately two years as a member of the Filene Research Council. Pat also serves as Treasurer on the Financial Service Centers Cooperatives (FSCC) Shared Branch Board and chairs their Budget Oversight Committee. She also serves on the CUNA State Issues Sub-Committee and the Oregon Credit Union Foundation. She formerly served on the Executive Council for the CUNA Lending Council, OR/WA CUES Council, Puget Sound CUES Council and as the Nominating Committee Chair for CUES at both the local and national levels. She is also a former member of the FNMA Product Advisory Council. Pat also serves as a member of the Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and is a member of the Finance and Audit Committee.

Pat holds the designation of Certified Senior Executive (CSE), and was the first recipient of the Credit Union Executives Society's National Operations Professional of the Year in 1992. She is a graduate of the Executive Development program at Cornell University and received her MBA from the University of Washington in 1999. Pat has served on the University of Washington Alumni Council and is a former advisor of the University of Washington CLASS XV Advised Fund, established January 2000 at The Seattle Foundation.

Pat's family includes her husband, Bill, and two grown children, Jason and Jenni. Her son-in-law, Scott Dobner, was added to the family in June 2005 and in July 2008, Logan Elliott Dobner was welcomed to the family. In her spare time, Pat enjoys travel, cooking, spending time with her family, and in particular taking care of little Logan.

Angelino Cayanan, VP of Finance/CFO

Angelino (Gino) joined Unitus Community Credit Union in June 2007 as the Vice President, Chief Financial Officer. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing Management from California State University of Hayward. He is member of the Credit Union Executive Society and the Financial Managers Society.

Prior to joining Unitus Community Credit Union, Gino was the Vice President and CFO for Community One Federal Credit Union in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Government of Guam Employees Federal Credit Union in Maite, Guam. Gino is responsible for the overall balance sheet management of the credit union and oversees the accounting, finance, investments and asset liability management functions of Unitus Community Credit Union.

Brian Irvine, VP of Information Technology

As Vice President and CIO, Brian is responsible for the long-term strategic direction and implementation of technology. He continuously improves internal systems and processes to meet current and future decision-making requirements of the credit union. His background includes several years of Information Technology leadership experience within the financial services industry.

Brian earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a major in Marketing from Walla Walla College. He serves as a board member and trustee for Mount Hood Medical Center Foundation, a board member for Hoodview Jr. Academy, and is an active member of the Society for Information Management.

Laurie Kresl, VP of Planning and Business Development

As the VP of Planning and Business Development, Laurie is responsible for marketing, business development, external and internal communications, public relations and community involvement at the Credit Union. Laurie plays a strategic role attracting new members interested in becoming part of the Unitus experience.

Laurie acquired her Bachelor's of Science in Secondary Education with a major in Communications from the University of North Dakota. She serves as a board member for the Oregon Business Association Education committee.

Paul Kirkbride, VP of Credit Services

Paul oversees all lending-related activities at Unitus. He is also responsible for collections and card services and is on the Board of Managers for Unitus’ auto-buying service, Smartway Auto Advisor, LLC. Paul’s primary role is to deliver quality lending products and services to the membership, while also managing the loan portfolio and lending operations.

Paul holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Business Management and Marketing. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Credit Union Association of Oregon's (CUAO) NW Chapter, is a member of the Credit Union National Association's Consumer Lending and Executive Councils, and serves on the CUAO’s State Issues Subcommittee. He is also a past member of the Credit Union Direct Lending Advisory Council and the Governor’s Task Force on Mortgage Lending.

In 2006, Paul was named a Rising 100 Executive by the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES). In 2008, he was awarded the CUAO’s Young Credit Union Professional of the Year award. Prior to joining Unitus, Paul held several lending-related positions at the Golden 1 Credit Union in Sacramento, California.

Jason Werts, VP of Member Services

In his role as Vice President of Member Services, Jason oversees the operations of the Unitus branch network as well as the organization’s Operations Support team and Contact Center. A key component of his role entails the further development of member service strategies for the organization.

Jason holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Puget Sound and earned his M.B.A. from Portland State University. Prior to joining Unitus, Jason held several positions within retail banking at Wells Fargo, both in Oregon and Nevada. While at Wells Fargo, Jason held management positions within Retail Operations and Marketing. Jason serves on the Credit Union Association of Oregon's Financial Literacy and Credit Union Advocacy Committees and has been a past member of the Board of Directors for Kids on the Block and continues to be involved with the SMART program.

Gayle Evans, VP of Human Resources

Gayle is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, evaluation and strategies of HR. Her duties include developing and managing comprehensive compensation, benefits, employee relations, training, and performance management programs that support the company’s objectives.

Gayle has a broad human resources background, with over fifteen years of successful HR leadership experience. She received a Bachelors degree in Management from Marylhurst College, Senior Professional in Human Resources certification through the Human Resources Certification Institute, and has earned additional certifications in leadership, coaching and personnel management. Gayle is a member of the national Society for Human Resources Management, serves on Oregon Business Association’s Health Policy Committee, and volunteers in North Clackamas School District.
